Wike Dismisses 2027 Jonathan Presidency Speculation, Says Former President Has Shown No Interest

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed growing speculation linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to the 2027 presidential race, insisting that there is no basis for such discussions without a clear declaration of interest from the former Nigerian leader.

Wike made the remarks on Monday during his monthly media briefing in Abuja while responding to questions about political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Rivers State governor maintained that no politician can be regarded as a candidate for any elective position unless the individual openly indicates a willingness to contest.

According to him, political aspirations are usually driven by personal interest and ambition before supporters or political groups begin mobilising in support of a potential candidate.

Wike argued that claims suggesting individuals are being persuaded by the public to run for office are often exaggerated, noting that aspirants typically send signals of their intentions before receiving encouragement from supporters.

You don’t go and bring somebody to run. Somebody will first indicate interest and then begin discussions with people,” he said.

The FCT Minister further stated that political contests do not begin through public pressure alone, stressing that no serious politician waits for people to draft them into an election without first showing a desire to participate.

When politicians say people are begging them to contest, that is usually not the full story. Nobody just sits quietly somewhere and people suddenly decide to push them into an election. There must have been some indication of interest,” Wike added.

Addressing the rumours surrounding Jonathan’s possible return to active electoral politics, Wike questioned the basis of the speculation, emphasizing that the former President has not publicly expressed any intention to seek the nation’s highest office again.

Has Jonathan ever expressed interest? He is a former President and deserves respect. Nobody can determine a candidate based on body language,” he stated.

His comments come amid increasing political discussions and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several names being mentioned in connection with possible presidential ambitions.

However, Wike’s position underscores the importance of official declarations rather than assumptions and political speculation in determining who may eventually join the race for Nigeria’s presidency.
