Senate Suspends Recess, Summons Lawmakers For Emergency Sitting
The Nigerian Senate has suspended its ongoing recess and fixed June 23, 2026, for an emergency sitting to deliberate on urgent national matters, with security issues expected to dominate discussions.
According to an official notice issued on June 15 by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, senators have been directed to reconvene at the Senate chamber by 11:00 a.m.
The notice stated that the special session was convened on the instruction of Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to enable lawmakers address issues requiring immediate legislative attention.
The Senate explained that the decision to recall members earlier than scheduled became necessary due to growing national concerns, particularly security-related developments and other matters considered important to national interest.
The emergency session means lawmakers will resume legislative activities ahead of the previously announced date.
The upper chamber had adjourned plenary on June 11 and was originally scheduled to resume regular proceedings on July 7.
The development comes amid renewed concerns over security challenges across different parts of the country, including reports of attacks, kidnappings and violent incidents that continue to attract public attention.
The Senate’s move follows a similar action by the House of Representatives.
Earlier, members of the House held an emergency sitting to consider amendments relating to the 2025 Appropriation Act.
The lawmakers considered a proposal seeking to extend the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget from June 30 to September 30 to allow additional time for project execution.
The emergency sitting is expected to provide lawmakers an opportunity to deliberate on measures aimed at addressing pressing national concerns and strengthening governance outcomes.
