The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has ratified and endorsed the outcome of its nationwide primary elections, while approving key reforms aimed at strengthening the party’s internal democratic processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The resolutions were reached during the party’s second NEC meeting, attended by its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, members of the National Working Committee, state chairmen, party leaders, and stakeholders from across the country.
Speaking after the meeting, the party’s National Leader, Henry Seriake Dickson, said the gathering provided an opportunity to review the party’s progress, assess the conduct of the recently concluded primaries, and chart a course for future activities as preparations intensify for the next general elections.
Dickson commended Obi and Kwankwaso for their leadership and commitment throughout the primary election process, while also acknowledging the contributions of governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly aspirants, party officials, volunteers, and supporters who participated in the exercises nationwide.
He noted that NEC reviewed reports from across the federation and unanimously endorsed the outcome of the primaries, praising electoral committees, screening and appeal panels, party officials, volunteers, candidates, and supporters for ensuring the successful conduct of the exercise.
“For a relatively young political party, what we have achieved within such a short period is remarkable,” Dickson stated.
While acknowledging challenges and disagreements recorded in some locations, the party reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, transparency, fairness, and inclusion.
NEC also resolved to intensify reconciliation efforts and stakeholder engagement across the country to strengthen party unity.
“The NDC values every member and remains committed to ensuring that everyone has a role to play in our collective journey,” he said.
In a move aimed at modernising its operations, NEC approved plans to introduce electronic voting for future congresses and primary elections.
The committee also directed the strengthening of the party’s digital membership registration and data management systems.
According to Dickson, the reforms are intended to enhance transparency, participation, and confidence in the party’s democratic processes.
The meeting further resolved to expand grassroots mobilisation and membership drives nationwide while reinforcing party structures at ward, local government, state, zonal, and national levels.
NEC also reviewed recent developments in Nigeria’s electoral landscape, including provisions of the Electoral Act and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party reiterated its commitment to pursuing lawful and constitutional means in defending electoral justice, democratic participation, and a level playing field for all political actors.
The meeting ended on a note of optimism, with party leaders expressing confidence in the NDC’s growing national presence and its vision of promoting good governance, national development, and democratic renewal. “The best is still ahead of us,” Dickson declared.
