Background to the Vacancies
The elections are being conducted to fill seats that became vacant following deaths and appointments involving former occupants.
In Ondo South, the vacancy arose after former Senator Jimoh Ibrahim was appointed as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Similar vacancies occurred in Rivers South East, Nasarawa North, and Enugu North following the deaths of Senators Barinada Mpigi, Godiya Akwashika, and Okey Ezea respectively.
INEC also noted that the by-elections will hold on the same day as the Ekiti State governorship election, making June 20 a significant electoral date across several parts of the country.
The commission assured voters and stakeholders of its readiness to conduct credible, transparent, and peaceful elections in all affected constituencies.
