ALGON Endorses Tinubu For 2027, Suspends Three LG Chairmen
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has endorsed Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was part of resolutions reached at ALGON’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja and chaired by its National President, Bello Lawal.
The motion for endorsement was moved by former ALGON President, Alabi Kolade David, and seconded by the Plateau State ALGON Chairman, Anani Hamisu Mohammed.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the association stated that continuity under the Tinubu administration would help deepen grassroots governance and consolidate ongoing reforms.
ALGON noted that policies under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda have improved fiscal capacity and strengthened autonomy at the local government level, enabling councils to better deliver development to communities.
The association also passed a vote of confidence in its National President, Bello Lawal, reaffirming support for his leadership and commitment to the unity of the body.
Meanwhile, ALGON announced the suspension of three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct:
Zakari Iliyasu (Niger State)
Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi (Kwara State)
Abba Shehu Tambuwal (Sokoto State)
The association said the suspension was based on allegations of impersonation, actions against its interests, and abuse of constitutional provisions.
It warned ministries, departments, agencies, state governments, and development partners not to engage with the affected officials, stating that they no longer have authority to represent ALGON in any capacity.
ALGON reiterated its commitment to policies that strengthen local government administration, noting that empowered councils are essential for improving service delivery, deepening democracy, and bringing governance closer to the people.
