Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of students and teachers in Esiele and Yawata communities of Oriire Local Government Area, saying the move is aimed at establishing the truth, strengthening security, and clearing his administration of allegations surrounding the incident.
The governor explained that the decision followed claims by some individuals that his administration orchestrated the abduction, stressing that an independent investigation was necessary to restore public confidence and ensure accountability.
Makinde stated that although the abducted victims had been rescued, the government’s responsibility did not end with their release. According to him, uncovering the facts behind the incident is essential to preventing similar attacks and improving the safety of schools across the state.
He said the commission would investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction, identify any institutional or operational failures, recommend measures to strengthen the protection of schools and communities, and propose reforms to prevent future occurrences.
The governor also recalled his family’s connection to the teaching profession, saying the incident highlighted the dangers faced by educators and reinforced the need for a comprehensive investigation. He maintained that his earlier call for international support was intended to ensure transparency and a thorough examination of the incident, not to undermine the efforts of security agencies.
Makinde commended members of the commission for accepting the assignment despite the political atmosphere, expressing confidence in their integrity and professionalism. He urged them to carry out their responsibilities impartially, guided only by evidence, the law, and the public interest.
The governor directed the panel to submit its report within four weeks but assured members that additional time would be granted if necessary to ensure a comprehensive investigation. He also pledged the full support of the state government and called on individuals, institutions, and relevant agencies to cooperate by providing useful information to assist the commission in its work.
