The management of Abia State University has reportedly suspended a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Dr. KC Izuogo, over allegations of extortion and unethical conduct involving students.

According to reports circulating among students and university stakeholders, the lecturer allegedly instructed students to purchase his handout for N5,000 and also pay an additional N20,000 to “sort” the course or risk failing the examination.

The allegations sparked outrage within the university community, with many students describing the demand as exploitative and a clear abuse of academic authority.

A student, who spoke anonymously, alleged that the lecturer made it clear that failure to comply with the demands could negatively affect students’ academic performance.

We were allegedly told that anyone who refused to buy the handout and pay the money would fail the course,” the student claimed.

Following growing complaints and pressure from concerned students and members of the public, the university management reportedly took disciplinary action by suspending the lecturer pending further investigation.

While the institution is yet to release a detailed official statement on the matter, the development has reignited conversations about corruption, extortion, and unethical practices in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Education stakeholders have continued to call on university authorities nationwide to strengthen internal monitoring systems and ensure that lecturers found guilty of exploiting students are held accountable.

The suspension has been welcomed by many students, who described the action as a step toward restoring integrity and fairness within the institution’s academic system.
