Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has formally announced his defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and declared his intention to contest for the Delta Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Omo-Agege said his decision followed “weeks of reflection, wide consultations, and honest conversations” with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders across the country.
The former lawmaker stated that the NDC represents a platform built on inclusion, accountability, grassroots participation, and true federalism, adding that the party offers “the clearest path to advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State, and Nigeria.”
Omo-Agege thanked key figures in the party for engaging him during the process, including Senator Seriake Dickson, Senator Moses Cleopas, Governor Peter Obi, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Declaring his ambition to return to the Senate in 2027, the former Deputy Senate President said the move was driven by what he described as a renewed call from the people of Delta Central for effective representation.
“This is not about me. This is about the mandate you entrusted to me in 2019 and the renewed call from our people for my return to the Senate,” he stated.
Omo-Agege also criticized the state of infrastructure and governance in Delta State, lamenting the condition of roads, healthcare facilities, schools, and the growing unemployment rate despite huge federal allocations accruing to the state.
“Right now, too much of Delta’s wealth sits in CBN accounts while our people suffer from bad roads, collapsed hospitals, and abandoned communities. This is not governance. It is a failure of leadership and a betrayal of public trust,” he said.
He vowed to strengthen the NDC structure across Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections, noting that his experience in building the APC into a competitive force in the state would be deployed to grow the new party from the grassroots.
According to him, his focus in the Senate would include attracting federal projects, ensuring accountability in public spending, supporting small businesses, improving healthcare and education, and advocating for policies that create jobs and boost agricultural productivity.
Omo-Agege further stressed the need for unity across Delta North, Delta South, and Delta Central, insisting that a united Delta State would have a stronger voice at the national level.
The former lawmaker also called on youths, women, traditional rulers, and registered voters across the state to mobilize and actively participate in the 2027 elections.
“To the youth of Delta State: your time is now. Do not accept the lie that you must wait your turn,” he said.
He described the 2027 elections as a defining moment for Delta State and Nigeria, urging citizens to reject “excuses, empty promises, and leaders who vanish after elections.”
Omo-Agege signed the statement as “His Excellency, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR, KSJI, Deputy President of the 9th Senate and Obarisi of Urhoboland.”
