Popular Nigerian skit maker and Nollywood actor, Debo Adedayo, widely known as Mr Macaroni, has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over comments perceived as a threat against a television journalist.

The controversy followed remarks made by Seun Okinbaloye during an episode of Politics Today on Channels Television, where he raised concerns about the possibility of Nigeria drifting toward a one-party state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During the programme, Okinbaloye expressed worry that ongoing internal crises within opposition parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress, could weaken democratic competition if not resolved.

He warned that a lack of viable opposition could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.

Reacting during a media chat in Abuja, Wike reportedly criticised the journalist’s comments, accusing him of taking sides in the political situation. His remarks, which included a controversial statement interpreted as a threat, have since sparked widespread reactions.

Taking to social media, Mr Macaroni strongly condemned the minister’s statement, describing it as inappropriate and alarming for a public office holder.

He expressed concern over what he termed a growing culture of impunity among public officials, stating that such comments could undermine democratic values and press freedom.

“This is a serving minister saying on live broadcast that he wished he could have shot a Nigerian journalist,” he wrote, warning against actions and rhetoric that may threaten media practitioners.

The incident has further stirred conversations around freedom of expression and the safety of journalists in Nigeria.

Observers say the situation highlights the need for public officials to exercise restraint in their public statements and uphold democratic principles, including respect for the media.
