President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a ₦15 billion take-off grant to support its development.

The approval was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the decision aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the institution; currently headquartered in Wudil, Kano State; into multiple campuses nationwide.

The newly approved campus will be funded through the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), with the ₦15 billion grant earmarked for infrastructure development, academic facilities, student accommodation, and essential training equipment.

The siting of the institution in Erinja followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The meeting reportedly considered factors such as student intake capacity, funding sustainability, academic quality assurance, and the evolving manpower needs of the Nigerian Police Force.

The Federal Government noted that the expansion of the Police Academy is part of broader efforts to strengthen institutional capacity, improve professional training, and enhance national security.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the new campus would contribute significantly to modern policing education and reinforce governance structures within the police system.
