FG Shifts Evacuation Of Nigerians From South Africa To Wednesday
The Federal Government has postponed the evacuation of Nigerians seeking to return home from South Africa following recent incidents of xenophobic violence targeting Black residents in the country.
The first evacuation flight, initially scheduled to depart on Monday, has now been rescheduled for Wednesday due to operational and logistical adjustments.
The development was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who explained that the change became necessary to facilitate the completion of ongoing arrangements for the exercise.
According to the ministry, President Bola Tinubu has approved five evacuation flights to be operated by Air Peace as part of efforts to assist Nigerians who have indicated interest in returning home.
The first flight is expected to transport approximately 270 passengers from Johannesburg once all required approvals and travel clearances are finalized.
The ministry also disclosed that the screening and documentation process for prospective returnees has been extended until Wednesday to accommodate more applicants.
Officials revealed that more than 500 Nigerians have already undergone screening and received clearance for possible evacuation.
The Federal Government assured citizens that necessary measures are being put in place to ensure the safe and orderly return of all eligible Nigerians participating in the evacuation programme.
The evacuation exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government to provide support and protection for its citizens affected by recent developments in South Africa.
