FG Arraigns Over 400 Terrorism Suspects In Abuja Courts
The Federal Government of Nigeria on Monday arraigned more than 400 terrorism suspects as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the prosecution of terrorism-related offences across the country.
The proceedings are currently taking place across multiple courtrooms within the Federal High Court Complex in Abuja.
The prosecution team is being led by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, alongside the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.
According to available details, the suspects are facing various charges connected to terrorism, aiding and abetting insurgent activities, and the financing of terrorism.
To facilitate the exercise, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, constituted a special panel of judges to oversee and determine the cases.
Legal representation for the Federal Government is being handled by the Attorney General’s office, while legal assistance for indigent defendants is being provided by the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.
The ongoing exercise forms part of efforts by the Federal Government to accelerate the hearing and determination of delayed terrorism-related cases.
Unlike previous arrangements where such trials were conducted at military facilities in Kainji, Niger State, the current proceedings are being held within the Federal High Court system in Abuja.
Earlier in April, the Federal Government commenced the large-scale prosecution of suspected terrorists before different divisions of the Federal High Court as part of a broader judicial process targeting individuals accused of terrorism and related offences.
Government officials disclosed that the broader prosecution exercise involves approximately 500 suspects and is intended to reinforce accountability and strengthen Nigeria’s counterterrorism legal framework.
