The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the introduction of 11 specialised streams for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as part of ongoing reforms aimed at modernising the scheme and improving its relevance to national development.

The reforms, approved during the weekly FEC meeting, form part of a broader restructuring agenda designed to make the NYSC more career-oriented, skills-driven and responsive to emerging workforce demands.

Speaking on the development, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed that while the one-year duration of the scheme has been retained, government approved several strategic reforms, including increased digitalisation, a transition in leadership structure from military to civilian administration and the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform.

Providing further details, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, explained that the NYSC orientation programme will now operate under a three-phase model intended to better prepare corps members for national service and post-service opportunities.

According to her, the first phase of orientation will focus on civic responsibility, leadership development, national values and nation-building.

The second phase will concentrate on career mapping, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business planning and access to funding opportunities.

She added that the final phase of the programme will provide corps members with specialised training based on selected professional pathways.

Under the new framework, every corps member will be required to choose one of 11 specialised streams during registration and receive targeted training throughout the orientation period.

The approved specialised streams are:

• Agric Corps

• Medical Corps

• Education Corps

• Tech and Digital Corps

• Legal Corps

• Public Service Corps

• Infrastructure Corps

• Green Corps

• Enterprise Corps

• Creative Economy Corps

• Paramilitary and Security Corps

Government explained that the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between academic training and labour market realities by equipping graduates with practical skills aligned with their disciplines, career interests and Nigeria’s evolving economic priorities.

Officials noted that the specialised stream system is expected to improve employability, strengthen innovation and support the development of a more productive and competitive youth population.
