A classified military document has reportedly listed 104 Nigerian Army personnel as deserters following a deadly attack allegedly carried out by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters on a military formation in Borno State.

The affected soldiers were attached to the 162 Amphibious Battalion located along the Mandara-Buratai Road axis in the North-East.

According to details contained in the internal military communication reportedly obtained by SaharaReporters, the soldiers were declared absent from duty after failing to return to their deployment location following the attack, with reports indicating that they left with their assigned weapons.

The incident reportedly occurred on June 5 during an early morning assault on the battalion’s location.

Military sources quoted in the report alleged that the attackers launched the operation at about 4:00 a.m. under heavy rainfall conditions, leading to casualties and injuries among personnel.

According to the sources, at least eight soldiers were reportedly killed during the attack, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

A military signal reportedly classified as “Restricted” stated that the affected personnel had not returned to duty several weeks after the incident and had consequently been declared deserters effective from the date of the attack.

The report further alleged that authorities had initiated administrative actions against the affected personnel, including restrictions on financial access and directives to military formations to apprehend any of the officers or soldiers found within their operational jurisdictions.

The breakdown of the affected personnel reportedly includes one Staff Sergeant, three Sergeants, seven Corporals, 38 Lance Corporals and 55 Privates.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official public statement confirming or responding to the claims contained in the leaked document.

The development comes amid ongoing military operations across the North-East region as security forces continue efforts to counter insurgency and restore stability in affected communities.

Further updates are expected as official responses emerge.
