ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike Over Unpaid Salaries, Unresolved Agreements
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on another nationwide industrial action over what it described as the poor and incomplete implementation of its December 2025 agreement with the Federal Government.
The warning followed the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Modibbo Adama University, Yola.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, expressed dissatisfaction over the continued withholding of salaries and unpaid entitlements owed to university lecturers across the country.
According to him, unresolved issues include the payment of withheld three-and-a-half-month salaries, promotion arrears, salary shortfalls linked to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), unremitted third-party deductions, and outstanding arrears from the 25–35 percent wage award.
Piwuna warned that the Federal Government’s handling of the issues was generating growing frustration among academic staff and could trigger another wave of industrial unrest if urgent action is not taken.
“The increasing frustration occasioned by the seeming government’s disinterestedness in the welfare of Nigerian academics is brewing a pent-up anger which could erupt into a new wave of industrial unrest if not addressed,” he stated.
The ASUU president appealed to both Federal and State Governments to fully implement agreements reached with the union in the interest of students, parents, and the nation’s education sector.
He added that while ASUU remains open to dialogue and engagement with the government, the NEC has directed that an emergency meeting be convened in the coming weeks to reassess the situation and determine the union’s next course of action.
The development raises fresh concerns over the possibility of disruptions in Nigeria’s public university system if negotiations between the government and ASUU fail to yield positive outcomes.
