Adelabu Set To Resign As Power Minister, Eyes Oyo Governorship Race

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from his position in the Federal Government as he prepares to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.

Sources within government circles disclosed that Adelabu recently met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he reportedly communicated his intention to join the race. Although he declined to speak with journalists after the meeting, insiders confirmed that the discussion centred on his political ambition.

There are indications that his resignation could take effect imminently, possibly before the end of the week.

Following his meeting with the President, Adelabu was also said to have held consultations with key stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including elder statesman Adebisi Akande and former NNPC board chairman Pius Akinyelure.

His move comes amid earlier directives requiring political appointees to resign before pursuing elective offices, a deadline he had initially missed.

Adelabu is no stranger to the Oyo governorship race. He contested the 2019 election under the APC and later ran in 2023 on the platform of the Accord Party.

With the APC fixing May 23, 2026, for its governorship primary and pegging the nomination form at ₦50 million, preparations for the contest are already underway. The sale of forms is scheduled to run from April 25 to May 2.

If he formally declares his candidacy, Adelabu is expected to join other aspirants within the party, including Sarafadeen Alli and Oyedele Alao, popularly known as Allow Alao.

His anticipated entry is expected to intensify competition within the APC as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
