A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has accused the current administration of enabling instability within opposition parties, warning that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democratic system.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, George argued that efforts to weaken opposition parties pose a serious threat to democratic governance.

“It is not good to weaken the opposition. That is not good for democracy,” he said, expressing concern over what he described as ongoing political manoeuvres targeting opposition structures.

George specifically criticised the role of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, linking his position in government to the internal crisis rocking the PDP.

He questioned the circumstances surrounding recent developments involving the party’s national secretariat, suggesting that Wike’s influence within the government may have contributed to the situation.

“If Wike was not the Minister of the FCT, do you think this would have been possible?” George asked, adding that holding a ministerial position should not be used to interfere in party affairs.

The PDP chieftain also cast doubt on the legitimacy of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting conducted by the Wike-backed faction, describing it as questionable.

He further alleged that there may be tacit support from the presidency for actions that are deepening divisions within the opposition.

Please, Mr President, the encouragement is virtually coming from the Villa,” he said, invoking the biblical phrase, “the hand of Jacob, the voice of Esau,” to describe the situation.

On claims that reconciliation efforts are ongoing within the PDP, George dismissed such assertions, particularly those associated with Wike.

He questioned the sincerity of unity moves, noting that Wike has openly declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of future elections.

The PDP has been grappling with a prolonged leadership crisis, with multiple factions laying claim to the party’s structure, raising concerns about its cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
