Tinubu hails Okonjo Iweala on WTO-DG Win

President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, on her unanimous re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala made history in 2021 as the first African and the first woman to lead the WTO, which has 164 member nations. Her current term, which began in 2021, will conclude on August 31, 2025, and her second term will start on September 1.

President Tinubu expressed his joy that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s re-election demonstrated the global community’s trust and confidence in her leadership to further multilateral trade and promote sustainable development.

In a statement by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu voiced confidence that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s continued leadership would reinforce the WTO’s role as a vital force for inclusive economic growth and good governance over the next four years.

The statement read, “As an active member of the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Nigeria remains committed to supporting the WTO’s mission to create a fair and equitable multilateral trading system.

“President Tinubu assures Dr. Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria’s unwavering support as she advances her transformative reforms, dedication to fair global trade practices, and efforts to foster international collaboration.”
