Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), stated that establishing a separate chamber of commerce in the Niger Delta aims to invigorate the region’s economy. He described it as a strategic catalyst for growth.

Speaking at the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA) sensitization workshop in Calabar, Ogbuku highlighted that the initiative will focus on training youth and aspiring entrepreneurs, while also supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. Represented by Orok Duke, the Cross River State Representative on the NDDC Board, he emphasized that the chamber would provide a supportive platform for emerging businesses.

Ogbuku encouraged the National Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), various business groups, and individuals seeking financial assistance to register with the new chamber. He noted that the chamber would attract new businesses and technologies to the Niger Delta and facilitate networking opportunities to enhance economic growth.

Victor Antai, the NDDC Executive Director of Projects, remarked that the initiative has transformed from vision to reality, emphasizing its potential impact on regional development. Represented by Godwin Nosiri, NDDC Director of Commercial and Industrial Development, Antai explained that the workshop was organized to raise awareness about NDCCITMA and explore its economic opportunities.

He added that startups and businesses in the conceptual phase could benefit from guidance offered by the chamber. Antai mentioned that the chamber would complement the Holistic Opportunity Projects of Engagement (HOPE), which focuses on skills training for youth.

Solomon Edebiri, Secretary of the NDCCITMA board, remarked that the successful establishment of the chamber reflects NDDC’s commitment to enhancing the region’s economy and providing support across various sectors. He praised the NDDC for leveraging the chamber as a development tool for both formal and informal businesses.

David Etim, President of the Calabar Chamber of Commerce, urged NDCCITMA to engage with larger industries to establish vocational training centers throughout the region for young entrepreneurs.
