The Federal Government has confirmed that the first batch of Nigerians voluntarily returning from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks will arrive in Lagos on Thursday morning.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to the ministry, the returnees will be airlifted aboard an Air Peace flight scheduled to depart O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
The aircraft is expected to land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The evacuation exercise is part of the Federal Government’s response to growing concerns over renewed attacks targeting foreign nationals in some parts of South Africa.
Nigerian authorities had earlier announced plans to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of citizens who expressed a desire to return home following the incidents.
The government reiterated its commitment to the safety, welfare and protection of Nigerians living abroad, assuring affected citizens that necessary measures are being taken to support them during the evacuation process.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that it continues to engage relevant South African authorities and stakeholders to address the situation and ensure the protection of Nigerian nationals residing in the country.
The arrival of the first batch of returnees marks the beginning of the government’s coordinated evacuation effort aimed at providing relief and support to Nigerians affected by the recent wave of xenophobic attacks.
