A journalist with Arise Television, Sumner Sambo, has dismissed speculations linking the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to a possible vice-presidential bid alongside Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a discussion on Arise Television’s The Morning Show, Sambo stated that available information suggests Okonjo-Iweala is not interested in leaving her current international assignment to participate in Nigeria’s political contest.

According to him, the WTO chief is focused on her responsibilities at the global trade body, where she recently commenced a second term expected to run until 2029.

Sambo argued that it would be difficult for a seasoned international public servant with a secured tenure to abandon such a strategic position for a political ticket that remains subject to Nigeria’s evolving political dynamics and legal processes.

He noted that although her name may have surfaced in political discussions as a potential running mate, indications are that she is not considering the option.

The journalist maintained that Okonjo-Iweala’s current role provides stability and global influence, making a transition into active partisan politics at this stage unlikely.

Political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections have continued to generate speculation regarding possible alliances, presidential candidates, and vice-presidential selections across various political platforms. However, no official announcement has been made linking Okonjo-Iweala to any political ticket.
