ALAAFIN’S WIFE HAS POWER TO INSTALL BAALE – OYO PALACE CLARIFIES AMID CONTROVERSY

The Alaafin of Oyo’s Palace has clarified that the wife of the monarch is traditionally empowered to install a Baale in Oyo town, following the recent controversy surrounding the installation of the Baale of the Ona-Aka community.

The clarification comes after the installation of Oyedokun Akinade as Baale by the Alaafin’s wife, Ayaba Abiwumi Owoade, which sparked debates across parts of the Yoruba-speaking region.

Speaking on the matter, the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaye, stated that the installation process strictly followed long-established Oyo chieftaincy traditions. He dismissed claims that the exercise was improper or unconstitutional.

According to Durojaye, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, lawfully delegated the responsibility to his wife, noting that such delegation is recognised and permitted under Oyo customs.

“The chieftaincy tradition of Oyo town allows the Ayaba to preside over the installation of a Baale, as directed by the Kabiyesi, the Alaafin of Oyo,” Durojaye explained.

He further clarified that while only the Alaafin has the exclusive authority to install kings (Obas), tradition allows the monarch to assign the installation of Baales to the Ayaba.

Durojaye added that the practice is not new, recalling that a similar arrangement was carried out during the reign of the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III.

The palace’s explanation follows growing public discourse, with some critics questioning the appropriateness of a royal consort performing what they considered a core traditional role.

Meanwhile, Ayaba Abiwumi Owoade, in a statement released through the palace, charged the newly installed Baale to prioritise peace, inclusiveness, and grassroots development within the Ona-Aka community.

She urged the Baale to promote unity, build trust across all groups, and prevent divisions capable of hindering sustainable development in the area.
