PDP Faction Meets Jonathan Amid Growing 2027 Presidential Speculations

A factional leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki, on Friday held a strategic meeting with former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, amid increasing discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential election.

The meeting comes less than 48 hours after Jonathan hinted that he was consulting widely over the possibility of returning to the presidential race in 2027.

Speaking on Thursday while addressing a delegation of supporters in Abuja who appealed to him to contest, the former president stated that seeking the nation’s highest office was a serious responsibility that required careful consultations and reflection.

“You are asking me to come and contest the next election. The presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely,” Jonathan reportedly told the group.

The latest engagement between the PDP faction and the former president has further fueled political speculation about a possible comeback bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, a legal challenge has already emerged against any potential presidential ambition by Jonathan.

A suit currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeks to stop the former president from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

The case was filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to declare Jonathan constitutionally ineligible to run for the presidency again.

On April 28, Justice Peter Lifu ordered that hearing notices be issued and served on all defendants involved in the matter.

The plaintiff is specifically seeking an order restraining Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
