Pressure Mounts on Senate to Declare Jimoh Ibrahim’s Seat Vacant

Calls are growing for the leadership of the Nigerian Senate to formally declare the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant following the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Voices from the district, including stakeholder Akinrinlola Olumide, argue that Ibrahim’s new diplomatic role effectively brings his tenure in the National Assembly to an end and requires immediate constitutional action.

In separate remarks, concerned stakeholders urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to act promptly, stressing that Ondo South should not be left without representation in the Senate.

They based their position on provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which outline conditions under which a legislative seat can become vacant, including resignation from office.

According to them, Ibrahim’s acceptance of an international appointment signals a transition that should trigger the process for declaring the seat vacant, paving the way for the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a bye-election.

Observers note that while such transitions are not uncommon in Nigeria’s political system, delays in formal procedures could leave constituents without representation during a crucial legislative period.

With political activities gradually building ahead of the 2027 general elections, stakeholders are calling for swift and transparent action to ensure continuity in representation and uphold democratic processes in Ondo South.
