After more than two decades of uninterrupted presence in the Lagos State legislature, the Speaker of the Mudashiru Obasa has formally declared his intention to move to the National Assembly, announcing a bid for the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement effectively signals Obasa’s exit from the state legislature after 23 years of political dominance, having first been elected in 2003 to represent Agege Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Since then, he has consolidated his influence through six consecutive electoral victories and has held the speakership position since 2015, becoming one of the most enduring figures in Lagos legislative politics.

Obasa is expected to contest for the federal seat currently held by Hon. Wale Ahmed, whose tenure in the House of Representatives runs until 2027.

His entry into the race further reshapes the political calculations in Agege, a constituency long regarded as one of the strongholds of the APC in Lagos State.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement held on Tuesday in Agege, Obasa said his decision followed wide consultations within the party structure. “Leaders of the APC in the constituency had urged me to join the race,” he said, framing his ambition as a response to internal party consensus rather than a unilateral move.

In a notable political realignment, Obasa also endorsed the return of his close political ally and former Agege Local Government Chairman, Kola Egunjobi, who had initially been in the race for the House of Representatives ticket.

Egunjobi is now expected to shift focus and seek the APC nomination for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Obasa further threw his weight behind another aspirant, Azeez Oladapo Yusuf Ninolowo, who is contesting to represent Agege Constituency II at the state level, reinforcing what appears to be a coordinated succession arrangement within the local APC structure.

The developments have intensified political maneuvering within Agege, as aspirants and their supporters ramp up consultations ahead of the APC primaries.

Party stakeholders say the unfolding alignments reflect early negotiations over influence, loyalty blocs, and succession planning in one of Lagos’ most politically strategic local government areas.

Meanwhile, screening processes conducted by both state and national leadership of the APC continue to shape expectations across Agege and Orile-Agege, with residents and party faithful awaiting clarity on who ultimately secures the party’s tickets ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
