The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been dealt another political blow in Delta State following the resignation of prominent party chieftain, Chief Pedro T. Bekenawei, amid growing concerns over the party’s internal stability.

Bekenawei announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Gbaramatu Ward 4 in Warri South-West Local Government Area, citing persistent leadership problems, internal divisions, and dwindling public confidence in the opposition party.

Explaining the reason behind his decision, the former party member said a careful assessment of developments within the PDP, from the national leadership to the grassroots, convinced him that the party was losing its relevance.

“I am not convinced, being an active member of the party, that the party is no longer viable, given the incessant internal factionalism, leadership crisis, and loss of public confidence,” he stated.

Bekenawei also expressed concern over the wave of defections that has continued to weaken the PDP’s influence and electoral strength across the country.

According to him, “What was once a dominant political force has seen its numerical strength reduced by mass defection, and this has undermined the party’s voting strength.”

He noted that his exit from the PDP would allow him pursue a new political direction aimed at rebuilding public trust and promoting good governance.

Thus, by this letter, I have resigned my membership of the PDP to enable me chart a new direction towards securing a better political future that will entrench public confidence and good governance,” the letter read.

Bekenawei’s resignation is the latest in a series of developments fueling concerns about the future of the PDP as the party continues to battle internal disputes and defections in several parts of the country.
