FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday To Mark 2026 Democracy Day
The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
The Ministry said June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s history, honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts contributed to the establishment and preservation of democratic governance in the country.
According to the statement, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.
The Ministry of Interior stated that the government would continue to strengthen internal security measures in collaboration with relevant security agencies to protect lives and property across the country.
The Minister noted that a secure and stable environment remains essential for the growth of democracy and national development.
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection, encouraging citizens to embrace lawful conduct, responsible participation, and national unity.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister said.
