The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, which occurred on 26 April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as a clear breach of operational rules and professional conduct.

According to preliminary findings, officers attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to a distress report from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway, where a suspect had reportedly been apprehended by members of a transport union while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel suspected to contain a firearm.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, confirmed that the suspect was in custody at the scene before the situation escalated fatally.

He stated: “While efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in clear violation of extant regulations, resulting in the death of the suspect.”

The Police High Command has since ordered the immediate transfer of ASP Nuhu Usman and members of his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.

They are expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary trial and possible prosecution.

Reaffirming the institution’s position on misconduct, the statement emphasized that the Force maintains “a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct that undermines public trust.”

The Inspector-General of Police also extended condolences to the bereaved family, assuring that justice would not be compromised. According to the statement:

The Inspector-General of Police extends his condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be served in accordance with the law.”

He further urged residents of Effurun and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations and disciplinary procedures continue.

The incident has continued to generate concern over use-of-force standards within policing operations, even as the Force insists accountability mechanisms have been activated.
