POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE: League of Northern Democrats Shakes Up Nigeria’s Status Quo
With a collective voice, a group of reputable political aficionados from Northern Nigeria has launched the League of Northern Democrats (LND), vowing to revamp the region’s political and economic fortunes. With a 226-member strong roster of former governors, federal lawmakers, and business magnates, the LND is poised to become a major force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
“We are committed to fostering a strong sense of community and solidarity… This unity will be the foundation for our efforts to reposition the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape,” the group declared in a communique after their meeting in Abuja.
The LND has set its sights on hosting a Northern Nigerian Political Summit in Kaduna, where key leaders, thinkers, and influencers will gather to chart a new course for the region’s political future, economic development, and security challenges.
Interim Chairman Senator Ibrahim Shekarau emphasized that the group’s primary concern is the development of Northern Nigeria, stressing that it does not represent any individual’s interest.
“We want to produce a document that reflects the aspirations of our people… We want to assure that this will be part of our guiding principles,” he said.
Convener Umar Ardo added, “We are worried about the problems of insecurity, hunger, starvation, poverty, and the economy… We want to resolve these issues conclusively.”
With their eyes set on transformative change, the LND is poised to shake up Nigeria’s power dynamics and reclaim the North’s rightful place in the country’s political landscape. Will they succeed? Only time will tell.
