NLC in Defiance: Union Vows to Resist Police Intimidation
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) slams the police summoning of its National President, Joe Ajaero, over allegations of financing terrorism as a “brazen act of intimidation” and a ” declaration of war” on the labour movement.
“This is a desperate attempt by the government to silence us and break our resolve,” said NLC Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja. “But we will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced. We will fight back with every fiber of our being.”
The NLC has called an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to address this “egregious” attack on its leadership and to plan a response. The meeting will be held at 8 a.m. on Tuesday at the Olaitan Oyerinde Hall, Labour House.
“This is a moment of truth for the labour movement,” said Ugboaja. “We will not let this attack go unchallenged. We will rise up and defend our rights. We will defend our leaders. We will defend our very existence.”
The police summoning of Ajaero is the latest in a series of attacks on the NLC and its leadership. On July 7, security forces conducted a night raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja, seizing documents and detaining several members.
“This is a witch-hunt and a clear attempt to discredit and destroy the NLC,” said Ugboaja. “But we will not let them succeed. We will fight back with every ounce of strength we have. We will fight for our rights. We will fight for justice. We will fight for democracy.”
