The Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called on the National Assembly to amend necessary sections of the 1999 Constitution to achieve full autonomy for local government areas in Nigeria. This call was made by the State Chairman of NULGE, Frederick Akinrinola, during a press briefing at the union’s secretariat in Akure. Akinrinola also commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting local government autonomy.

This briefing follows a recent Supreme Court judgment granting full autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, a decision that has been widely praised. Akinrinola urged both national and state legislators to amend the constitution to facilitate this autonomy.

Abimbola Babalola, the National Vice President and South-West Chairman of NULGE, echoed these sentiments and encouraged local government employees to continue advocating for political autonomy. The union members also held a peaceful rally to show appreciation to President Tinubu and the judiciary for their support.

NULGE members in Ondo State believe that full autonomy will promote rapid development at the grassroots level.
