Former U.s. Envoy Criticises Nigerian Government Over Alleged Targeted Violence Against Christians

Former United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy, has criticised the Nigerian government over what he described as its failure to acknowledge allegations of targeted violence against Christians in parts of the country.

Nagy made the remarks in a post shared via his official 𝕏 account, where he also referenced concerns surrounding discussions in the United States regarding sanctions linked to U.S.-based separatist figure, Ogechukwu Nkere.

Reflecting on the historical impact of the Nigerian Civil War, Nagy stated that communities in the former Biafra region suffered severe losses and continue to experience long-term consequences.

According to him, the Nigerian government should focus on governance and security concerns rather than actions perceived as limiting external expressions of political views.

“Nigerians in former Biafra suffered greatly, never fully recovering from the horrendous war. Also tragic is the Nigerian government’s refusal to admit there is a huge problem with targeted violence against Christians.

“The Nigerian govt. should try giving Biafrans justice, security, and good governance instead of trying to suppress their freedom of expression outside Nigeria. That would be a much better use of their funds!” Nagy stated.

The comments add to ongoing discussions around security, religious freedom and governance in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded Nigerian travellers to comply with U.S. immigration regulations and visa conditions.

In a statement shared on its official 𝕏 platform, the Mission advised Nigerians travelling for studies, work or visits to remain within authorised periods of stay, maintain valid documentation and avoid actions that could affect future travel opportunities.

“Staying compliant with U.S. immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do; it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travelers,” the Mission stated.

The advisory forms part of ongoing U.S. efforts to reduce visa overstays and maintain the integrity of its immigration system.

The Mission added that adherence to immigration procedures supports both individual opportunities and stronger relations between Nigeria and the United States.

“When you respect the process, everyone wins,” the statement added.
