Peter Obi May Struggle To Match 2023 Performance In 2027, ACF Spokesman Says
The National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Professor Tukur Mohammed-Baba, has expressed doubts about the ability of Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to replicate his 2023 electoral performance in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Mohammed-Baba said recent political developments and Obi’s movement across different political platforms could affect his chances in the next election cycle.
According to him, Nigerian politics has increasingly become driven by personal ambitions rather than genuine service to the people, a trend he described as unhealthy for democratic development.
“What is becoming clear is that many politicians are pursuing individual interests; who becomes what and who controls a particular platform. Politics should primarily be about serving the people. Once personal ambition becomes the dominant motive, it loses its value to the electorate,” he stated.
The ACF spokesman further argued that many Nigerians have become disillusioned with political actors due to persistent economic and social challenges facing the country.
“Many ordinary Nigerians now believe they are largely on their own. They tell you that only God can help them because they no longer have confidence in political promises. While prayer is important, meaningful action is equally necessary,” he said.
Mohammed-Baba also criticized the growing trend of political parties revolving around individual personalities rather than clear ideologies and programs.
Assessing Obi’s political prospects, he acknowledged the former Anambra State governor’s strong showing in the 2023 presidential election but suggested that circumstances have changed significantly since then.
“Peter Obi performed remarkably well in 2023 and made significant electoral gains. However, developments over the past year have weakened some of the momentum that supported him. I would be surprised if he achieves the same level of performance in 2027,” he said.
He questioned Obi’s political trajectory, noting that his association with multiple political platforms has raised concerns among some observers.
“He has moved across different political platforms, and naturally people are asking questions about his long-term political direction,” Mohammed-Baba added.
The ACF spokesman also commented on NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, who secured victory in Kano State during the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
According to him, it remains uncertain whether Kwankwaso can repeat that feat in 2027.
“Kwankwaso delivered Kano State in 2023, but there are genuine questions about whether he can achieve the same outcome in the next election, particularly given recent political developments and some of his public statements,” he said.
Mohammed-Baba maintained that political leaders must focus more on addressing the needs of citizens rather than pursuing personal ambitions if they hope to regain public trust ahead of future elections.
