The Chairman of the Accord Party (AP) in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State, Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila, is currently receiving treatment after sustaining severe injuries in a late-night gun attack by suspected assailants in Osogbo.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday around the Community Bank area of the MDS axis in the Osun State capital.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers targeted a blue Toyota Corolla conveying Ajibola and several associates. The gunmen were said to have pursued the vehicle before opening fire repeatedly on its occupants.
One of the survivors recounted that the group was returning from the MDS area when the armed men suddenly began chasing them and unleashed a barrage of gunfire on the vehicle.
The occupants reportedly escaped by driving to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters, where they sought protection before the attackers fled the scene.
Ajibola sustained critical injuries during the attack and was immediately rushed to the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for urgent medical attention. Sources disclosed that his condition remained critical at the time of filing this report.
Reacting to the development, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the attack and called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Describing the shooting as unfortunate and disturbing, Alimi urged security agencies to ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
He emphasized the need for a professional, impartial, and thorough investigation, noting that preliminary indications suggest possible political undertones behind the attack.
The commissioner further stressed that no individual or group should be allowed to undermine public peace and security, adding that the perpetrators must be brought to justice.
Security agencies have since commenced efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack as residents await further updates on the victim’s condition and the progress of investigations.
