Lagos Directs Banks, Eateries, Filling Stations To Open Toilets To Public

The Lagos State Government has directed banks, filling stations and eateries across the state to make their restroom facilities accessible to the public, as part of intensified efforts to curb open defecation.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Saturday, noting that while the government has expanded public sanitation infrastructure, private sector collaboration is now essential to close existing gaps.

According to Wahab, the state currently has 1,710 functional public toilets strategically distributed across various locations to serve residents and visitors. However, he emphasised that government efforts alone are insufficient to meet the sanitation needs of a rapidly growing population.

“As part of our sustained efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve public sanitation across Lagos State, we currently have 1,710 functioning public toilets,” he said.

He added that encouraging businesses with public-facing facilities to open their restrooms would significantly enhance access to sanitation and support ongoing environmental initiatives.

The directive also comes with stricter enforcement of sanitation regulations, with authorities confirming that individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Wahab stressed that maintaining environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility, urging residents and business owners to support the initiative.

“These measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment for all,” he stated.

The move forms part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to promote hygiene, improve public health outcomes, and ensure a cleaner, safer environment across the state.
