The Joint Task Force South Operation Delta Safe has intercepted multiple vessels laden with illegally obtained crude oil, in an operation described as one of the most significant anti-oil theft crackdowns in recent times.

Sources disclosed that the seized consignment is estimated to be worth about $300 million, highlighting the scale of economic sabotage being carried out within Nigeria’s oil-rich regions.

According to details made available, the operation was conducted following credible intelligence on the movement of suspected illegal crude oil shipments along key waterways in the Niger Delta. Military operatives reportedly tracked and intercepted the vessels before they could exit designated maritime zones.

Authorities revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the crude oil was siphoned through illegal connections to pipelines and transported using unauthorized vessels, a method commonly employed by oil theft syndicates.

The operation is part of intensified efforts by security agencies to combat crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and illegal refining activities, which have continued to pose serious threats to Nigeria’s economy and energy sector.

A senior official involved in the operation noted that the success of the interception underscores improved surveillance, inter-agency collaboration, and the deployment of advanced monitoring systems across critical oil infrastructure.

“This operation sends a clear message that illegal activities within the oil sector will not be tolerated. We are strengthening our operations to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” the source stated.

The military also confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend individuals and networks behind the illegal shipment, including possible collaborators within host communities and the oil sector.

Crude oil theft has long been a major challenge in Nigeria, leading to significant revenue losses and environmental degradation in affected communities. The latest interception is expected to boost confidence in ongoing efforts to secure the nation’s oil assets and curb illicit activities in the Niger Delta.

Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to sustaining the crackdown while calling on stakeholders and local communities to support efforts aimed at protecting national resources.
