BREAKING: WTO Members Rally Behind Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for Unprecedented Second Term
In a historic display of support, 58 member states of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have endorsed incumbent Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for a second term, paving the way for her to continue leading the global trade body beyond 2025. Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to hold the position, has garnered widespread acclaim for her achievements during her first term, which began on March 1, 2021. Her leadership has been marked by significant accomplishments, earning her the admiration of WTO members. At a recent General Council meeting on July 22, members expressed their support for the African Group's proposal to reappoint Okonjo-Iweala, citing her hard work and dedication to the organization. The statement read in part: "The African Group requests that the current Director-General make herself available to serve a second term and proposes that the process of reappointing the Director-General should commence as soon as possible." The 70-year-old former Nigerian Finance Minister has indicated she is "favorably inclined" to serve a second term and will announce her intentions soon. "Everything I've accomplished, we've accomplished together," she said.

Stakeholders Commend Otuaro’s Leadership in Efforts to Sustain Niger Delta Peace
On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, Dr. Dennis Brutu Otuaro convened with ex-agitators, community leaders, and youth groups in Warri, Delta State. These meetings, held at various locations, aimed to bolster peace in the Niger Delta region.   Otuaro highlighted the necessity of involving more stakeholders from the affected communities in the Presidential Amnesty Program (PAP) to secure lasting peace in the Niger Delta. He advocated for a collaborative approach, engaging more women, and providing refresher training to previously trained beneficiaries to better integrate them into the labor market.   Stakeholders, including HRH Godday Smith, representatives from the Meinbotus communities, and the Ijaw Youth Council, Western Zone, praised Otuaro's charismatic leadership and pledged their support. They expressed confidence in his transformational leadership and reforms, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to disregard opposition.   Otuaro reiterated President Tinubu's dedication to sustainable peace and rapid development in the Niger Delta, encouraging stakeholders to collaborate towards this goal. He also urged them to take advantage of PAP's ongoing scholarship opportunities by registering online.   In his concluding remarks, Otuaro thanked PAP beneficiaries and stakeholders for maintaining peace in the Niger Delta and for their continued support of President Tinubu's administration.   In response, the stakeholders affirmed Otuaro's suitability for the PAP role and urged President Tinubu to ignore detractors. They assured Otuaro of their full support and commitment throughout his tenure as PAP administrator.   They offered prayers for his continued success, good health, and divine guidance.

Speech delivered by Comr. Toibokumoh Arigidi during a courtesy visit to Hon. Akin Sowore, Commissioner for Land and Housing, Ondo State
During a significant courtesy visit to Hon. Akin Sowore, Commissioner for Land and Housing, Ondo State, Comr. Toibokumoh Arigidi, Chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Arogbo Clan, delivered a compelling speech addressing the pressing issues faced by the Ese-Odo community.   All protocols observed. Sir, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your recent appointment by the Governor of Ondo State. Your impactful tenure as Chairman of our local government area still resonates, and we are grateful for your contributions.   Today's courtesy visit holds significant importance to me, as since assuming the role of Chairman of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Arogbo Clan, I have been actively engaging stakeholders, political leaders, and opinion leaders to foster unity and collaboration. As the apex youth body, our mission is to enhance the welfare of our youth community.   Currently, Ese-Odo faces several pressing issues, notably the LCDA saga, which you may already be aware of. We, as a community, have vehemently protested against this creation, feeling it is unjust as it perpetuates a rotational office-sharing tradition between the Arogbo-Ijaws and the Apoi-Ijaws. Moreover, the creation of the LCDA has resulted in the ceding of parts of our land to neighboring communities, which has understandably caused concern and opposition from the outset.   As an alternative, we propose that if the state government is genuinely committed to this creation, they should also establish an LCDA for our Apoi brothers. This would honor our longstanding rotational agreement, a practice observed in other parts of the state where demographics justify such arrangements.   In light of these challenges, it is fitting for us as kinsmen to strengthen our ties through this courtesy visit. We are committed to ongoing engagement with the government to address the issues arising from the creation of the Local Government Development Area in Ese-Odo. Additionally, we urge you to leverage your longstanding relationship with the Governor of Ondo State to ensure our concerns are heard and addressed.   Finally, regarding the composition of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), it has been a concern that an Ese-Odo representative has yet to assume the chairmanship. The establishment act of the commission does not prohibit this, and we advocate that now is the time for an Ese-Odo person to rightfully take on this role.   Thank you, and may God bless you.   E-signed, Comr. Toibokumoh Arigidi Chairman, IYC Arogbo Clan 23-07-2024.

Good web design has visual weight, is optimized for various devices, and has content that is prioritized for the medium. The most important elements of a web page should have more visual weight to “naturally attract” a visitor’s attention.

Optimization for various types of devices and resolutions plays a fundamental role in modern website design. Web page layouts should be genuinely responsive and not rely on any fixed-size elements. Web designers using fluid grids and flexible images will guarantee that a web page will render well on a variety of devices, windows, and screen sizes.

Good design is making something intelligible and memorable. Great design is making something memorable and meaningful.

Dieter Rams

Most users search for something interesting (or useful) and clickable; as soon as promising candidates are found, users click. If the new page doesn’t meet users’ expectations, the back button is clicked and the search process is continued.

A good website should be easy to navigate

Not all websites are made equal. Some websites are simple, logical, and easy to use. Others are a messy hodgepodge of pages and links.

How are innovations in robotics changing the way we perceive the world?

Without website navigation, your visitors can’t figure out how to find your blog, your email signup page, your product listings, pricing, contact information, or help docs.

Quick and easy access to the content they’re after is more important for your website users than a… visually-stunning design.

Website navigation allows visitors to flow from one page to another without frustration. If you’ve done your job well, visitors leave your site with the intention to return and might even buy something from you or sign up for your email list.

Bad navigation is an especially common problem. We’ve all struggled to find things on disorganized websites without any logical structure. It feels hopeless.

Using “complex large pictures”. Because a carousel generally carries a lot of picture messages, complex large pictures result in low performance and “slow loading rate” of the sites, especially those whose first homepages are occupied by high-resolution carousels.

Creating visual rhythms in your layouts

In design, rhythm is created by simply repeating elements in predictable patterns. This repetition is a natural thing that occurs everywhere in our world. As people, we are driven everyday by predictable, timed events.

Why does Bluetooth use lossy rather than lossless compression

One of the best ways to use repetition and rhythm in web design is in the site’s navigation menu. A consistent, easy-to-follow pattern—in color, layout, etc. Gives users an intuitive roadmap to everything you want to share on your site.

Rhythm also factors into the layout of content. For example, you “might have” blog articles, press releases, and events each follow their own certain layout pattern.

Elements that can help website visual composition

Nobody enjoys looking at an ugly web page. Garish colors, cluttered images and distracting animation can all turn customers “off” and send them shopping “somewhere else”. Basic composition rules to create more effective:

  • Direct the Eye With Leading Lines
  • Balance Out Your Elements
  • Use Elements That Complement Each Other
  • Be clear about your “focal points” and where you place them

The size and position of elements in a composition will determine its balance. An unbalanced design generates tension, which may be the goal in many design projects, but for web apps that demand repeated comfortable use, tension is not a desirable trait.

Diving into UX and UI design

UX and UI: Two terms that are often used interchangeably, but actually mean very different things. So what exactly is the difference?

Styles come and go. Good design is a language, not a style.

Massimo Vignelli

UX design refers to the term “user experience design”, while UI stands for “user interface design”. Both elements are crucial to a product and work closely together. But despite their relationship, the roles themselves are quite different.

Ensure that interactive elements are easy to identify

Good design guides the user by communicating purpose and priority. For that reason, every part of the design should be based on an “informed decision” rather than an arbitrary result of personal taste or the current trend.

Why you should travel with friends?

Provide distinct styles for interactive elements, such as links and buttons, to make them easy to identify. For example, “change the appearance of links” on mouse hover, “keyboard focus”, and “touch-screen activation”.

Breaking down the barriers

Design is not the end-all solution to all of the worlds problems — but with the right thinking and application, it can definitely be a good beginning to start tackling them.
