The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly stormed the Green Legacy Hotel, situated within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State, arresting several youths suspected to be internet fraudsters during an early-morning poolside party.
The operation, carried out by operatives from the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Office in the early hours of Sunday, threw the hotel into chaos as gunshots reportedly rang out, prompting guests and partygoers to flee in panic.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the officers arrived unexpectedly, sparking confusion and fear. Videos circulating on social media show guests scrambling for safety while EFCC operatives seized vehicles and other valuables. Sources claim that more than 20 luxury cars were impounded during the raid.
The crackdown comes just days after EFCC operatives from the Ibadan Zonal Directorate raided K-Hotel in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, arresting 55 suspects including one alleged to be in possession of two locally-made pistols.
A social media user on X (formerly Twitter), identified as A. Ayomide, shared how he narrowly avoided being caught in the Abeokuta operation:
“Literally left my house past midnight to go to OOPL, got there and the crowd was too much. I don’t like the settings, my guy doesn’t like the settings, so we were just at the car park. Left around 1:30. Twenty minutes later, I get home and I’m getting calls that EFCC is raiding OOPL.”
When contacted, the Managing Director of OOPL Ventures, Vitalis Ortese, confirmed there was indeed an incident but declined to give details:
“Yes, they did. There was an incident this morning. We will find out and we will let you know.”
Similarly, the EFCC Lagos Zonal Command spokesperson, Ayo Oyewole, said he was not yet aware of the operation but promised to investigate.
As of press time, official details on the number of arrests and items recovered had yet to be released, leaving the public eager for clarification on the dramatic operation that has once again thrust the EFCC’s anti-cybercrime efforts into the spotlight.
