President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate launch of free healthcare services for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), in a bid to improve the quality of life for vulnerable senior citizens across the country.

In a statement released by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday, the President also directed the prompt implementation of overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee, describing them as critical components of social protection and retirement dignity.

The directive followed a presidential briefing by the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Mrs. Omolola Oloworaran, who updated the President on the status of the pension system, current challenges, and ongoing reforms.

Responding to recent protests by retired police officers over poor pensions and harsh living conditions, President Tinubu also ordered the urgent resolution of the lingering police pension issue, insisting that officers who dedicate their lives to national service must retire in peace and dignity.

Mrs. Oloworaran assured the President of ongoing efforts to preserve pension value amidst inflation and economic challenges. She also disclosed plans to allow foreign currency contributions to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the scheme, alongside broader reforms to expand pension coverage and boost retiree welfare nationwide.

President Tinubu welcomed the proposed reforms and reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to inclusive growth, social protection, and a dignified life for every Nigerian retiree.
