In a decisive move to quell growing unrest in Delta State’s Warri axis, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Monday summoned key representatives of the Ijaw, Urhobo, and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities to a closed-door session in Abuja.
Reliable sources confirmed that only nine selected leaders from the three groups were granted access to the meeting, which commenced shortly after midday. A mild drama reportedly unfolded when Chief Ayiri Emami allegedly attempted to record the session with his phone; contravening protocol; which led to the device being confiscated. His purported claim of association with Chief Boro Opudu was also publicly dismissed, according to those present.
The meeting came against a backdrop of heightened inter-ethnic tension in the Warri metropolis. In his introductory remarks, NSA Ribadu outlined the agenda and clarified boundaries for discussion:
1. The engagement was strictly to address the escalation of ethnic tensions;
2. Matters concerning the recent Supreme Court ruling were off-limits, being constitutionally settled;
3. Land ownership disputes were ruled out of the conversation;
4. The independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was reaffirmed;
5. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains committed to fostering harmony across Nigeria’s diverse communities.
Ribadu issued a stern warning that security operatives would not hesitate to act decisively against any group found inciting violence or disturbing the peace.
Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, APC chieftain Amb. Coleman Timi described the NSA’s intervention as a well-calculated move by the President, aimed at navigating the intricate socio-political currents within Warri. He urged ethnic leaders to prioritize peacebuilding efforts and remain committed to dialogue.
Amb. Timi also debunked rumors circulating on social media, especially reports suggesting the destruction of land documents during the meeting. He cautioned stakeholders to be wary of disinformation and resist attempts to twist facts.
As of press time, the security situation in Warri remains under heightened observation, with intelligence operatives closely monitoring developments to preempt any potential outbreaks of violence.
