Senate Reverses Controversial Standing Order Amendments, Reopens Leadership Race
The Nigerian Senate has reversed its recent amendments to the Senate Standing Orders, a move that reopens the contest for key leadership positions in the 11th National Assembly ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
The decision, reached during plenary on Thursday, effectively restores broader eligibility for senators seeking presiding and principal offices, including the position of Senate President.
The earlier amendment, introduced on Tuesday, had restricted eligibility by requiring senators seeking offices such as Senate President and Deputy Senate President to have at least eight years of uninterrupted service in the Senate.
Under the now-reversed provisions, only lawmakers who served continuously through both the 9th and 10th Senate would have qualified to contest for major leadership positions in 2027.
The amendment also affected other strategic offices within the Red Chamber, including Senate Leader, Chief Whip, Minority Leader, and related principal roles.
The revised Order 4 had prioritised nominations based on ranking, giving preference to former Senate Presidents, Deputy Senate Presidents, principal officers, experienced senators, former House of Representatives members, and finally first-time senators where necessary.
Order 5 further stated that senators must complete at least two consecutive terms before contesting for principal offices.
However, lawmakers later raised concerns that the amendments could trigger constitutional disputes and create unnecessary political tension within the National Assembly.
The Senate subsequently agreed that its Standing Orders must align with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and internationally accepted legislative practices.
The reversal now restores the previous arrangement, allowing ranking senators with at least four years in the National Assembly to contest for leadership positions.
The development has reopened political calculations ahead of 2027, with prominent figures such as Hope Uzodimma and Adams Oshiomhole among names being linked to possible future contests for Senate leadership positions.
