The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, 27 May, and Thursday, 28 May, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration across Nigeria.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Federal Government.

According to the statement, the declaration underscores what it described as the government’s “profound respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims who join the global Islamic community in observing this sacred occasion.”

Eid-ul-Adha, one of the most significant Islamic festivals, commemorates sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for others, values the government said remain central to national unity and peaceful coexistence.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, extended the Federal Government’s felicitations to Muslim faithful in Nigeria and in the diaspora, describing the period as one for reflection and renewed spiritual commitment.

The statement read in part: “Eid-ul-Adha is a festival of deep spiritual significance, grounded in the values of sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for one’s fellow man.”

It further urged Nigerians to use the holiday period for prayers and sober reflection, seeking divine guidance for the country as it continues efforts toward peace, security, and economic prosperity.

The Federal Government also called for unity among citizens, stressing that the celebration should reinforce bonds of “brotherhood and shared humanity” across religious and ethnic lines.

The directive is made available to the cyber space and formally signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, who conveyed the approval of the Federal Government in the official notice dated 25 May, 2026.
