The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly reopened investigations into allegations of financial misconduct involving former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, following a fresh petition by a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma.
The renewed call for investigation seeks to revive a matter dating back to 2006, with the petitioner urging the anti-graft agency to revisit its previous findings and examine allegations raised in subsequent international reports.
Agbonayinma reportedly submitted the petition on August 27, 2026, which the commission received on September 1. The document was filed through his legal counsel, Chief Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, SAN.
As part of the process, the former lawmaker appeared at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, where he formally adopted the petition and reportedly responded to questions from investigators.
The petition specifically calls for a review of the EFCC’s September 2006 report and a February 4, 2010, report by the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
According to Agbonayinma, the earlier EFCC investigation had raised issues concerning possible prosecution after Atiku’s tenure as Vice-President, when his constitutional immunity no longer applied. He questioned why the matter was not subsequently pursued.
Speaking on his petition, Agbonayinma maintained that the fight against corruption should not be influenced by political status or social standing, urging the EFCC to demonstrate impartiality in handling allegations against public office holders.
He also called on the commission to ensure that matters involving alleged financial misconduct receive appropriate attention rather than remain unresolved.
The development has renewed public interest in the historical allegations and the responsibility of anti-corruption institutions to ensure accountability in public service.
However, the renewed petition and reported investigative steps do not amount to proof of wrongdoing. No conclusion of criminal liability against Atiku Abubakar has been established by the information presented in the petition.
