The Federal Government has introduced new initiatives aimed at boosting development in Nigeria’s Delta region. Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, shared updates during the 2025 ministerial press briefing on Friday, outlining the creation of two new regional commissions and the progress of key infrastructure projects in the Niger Delta.
The Ministry of Regional Development, formed in October 2024, now oversees the newly established North-West and South-East regional commissions. These commissions are intended to promote regional development and reduce disparities across the country.
Although the Ministry of Niger Delta continues to exist, its functions have now been integrated into the Ministry of Regional Development, with Momoh emphasizing that the focus on the Niger Delta will remain a priority.

Momoh highlighted several completed and ongoing projects aimed at improving the region’s infrastructure, such as the Gberegolor-Ogriagbene Road in Delta State, which is set to enhance transportation in the area.
In addition to transportation, the ministry is focused on improving essential services like water and electricity. Over 250 solar street lights were installed in the region in 2023, with more electricity projects underway to support economic growth.
The ministry is also implementing water supply projects, including community water schemes in Imo and Delta states, and has initiated ferry services to connect communities separated by waterways.
A major focus is empowering the youth in the region, with over 1,000 youths trained this year alone. These individuals are also receiving grants to help them establish businesses, continuing efforts to create sustainable livelihoods.
The minister emphasized that peace and stability are crucial for the region’s economic prosperity, which in turn contributes to the nation’s overall economic health. In closing, Momoh expressed confidence that the new regional commissions would bring significant development to Nigeria.
