The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has reiterated that he is not guilty of any offense and has urged his supporters not to plead for his release.
Kanu made this statement during his court appearance at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he is facing charges related to alleged terrorism and treasonable felony. He maintained that he has done nothing unlawful to warrant his detention, emphasizing that his continued incarceration is politically motivated.
“I have committed no crime, and I should not be here. No one should beg for my release because I am not guilty of anything,” Kanu stated in open court.
His legal team, led by Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has consistently argued that the charges against him lack merit and have called for his unconditional release. They also cite the ruling of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which previously recommended Kanu’s immediate release.
Meanwhile, IPOB supporters have continued to demand his freedom, organizing protests and legal campaigns both within Nigeria and internationally.
As the case proceeds, legal analysts believe that the Federal Government’s stance on Kanu’s detention will have significant political and security implications, especially in the Southeast region.
