Wike backs Tinubu’s stance on local government Autonomy
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), praised President Bola Tinubu’s stance on local government autonomy during the inauguration of upgraded roads in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja. He emphasized that granting autonomy to local councils would promote grassroots development and encouraged residents to hold their council leaders accountable.
Wike highlighted the positive collaboration between the FCT administration and the six council chairmen since their appointments, stating that he has not inquired about their financial allocations and does not intend to. He affirmed his support for the president, insisting that accountability should come from the councils regarding their funding.
This initiative aligns with the July 11 Supreme Court ruling that grants financial autonomy to local governments, as inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume. The aim is to ensure local governments can operate independently without state government interference, in accordance with the constitutional recognition of local governments as a vital tier of government.
