EPL: Chelsea climbs a step higher with 2-1 victory over Newcastle
Cole Palmer led Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday, helping them rebound in the English Premier League. Meanwhile, Tottenham suffered a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, marking Palace’s first win of the season.
Later that day, Liverpool had the chance to reclaim the top spot with a win against Arsenal in a highly anticipated clash.
Manchester United’s struggles continued under Erik ten Hag, as they faced their fourth league defeat in nine matches, raising questions about his future. United had several opportunities to take control of their match against West Ham, with Alejandro Garnacho hitting the woodwork early on and Diogo Dalot missing a clear chance after rounding the goalkeeper.
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui reacted to a disappointing first half by making three substitutions at halftime. One of the substitutes, Crysencio Summerville, scored against the run of play in the 74th minute. Casemiro equalized for United with a close-range header, but late drama ensued when VAR awarded a penalty for a foul on Danny Ings. Jarrod Bowen converted the penalty, pushing West Ham above United, who now sit 14th in the table.
Chelsea had previously suffered their first league defeat under coach Enzo Maresca but returned to form with Palmer instrumental in their performance. Although his goal was ruled offside early on, he assisted in the opening goal with a great pass to Pedro Neto, who set up Nicolas Jackson for his sixth goal of the season.
Newcastle, now without a win in five league matches, managed to equalize before halftime when Alexander Isak scored from a Lewis Hall cross. However, Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead just two minutes into the second half with a powerful strike.
Newcastle had a chance to equalize again, but Isak squandered a clear opportunity after rounding the Chelsea goalkeeper.
At Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace, starting the day in the relegation zone, secured three points against Tottenham thanks to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goal, assisted by Eberechi Eze. Although Eze had another goal disallowed for offside, Tottenham struggled offensively without their injured captain, Son Heung-min, and have only one win in five away league matches this season, leaving them eighth and four points off the top four.
