Young Nigerians have been urged to reject the growing belief that education is a scam, with the reminder that only those who read can become tomorrow’s leaders. This message was shared by TotalEnergies during the 2024 edition of their annual book reading event at their headquarters in Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt.

Obi Imemba, executive director of TotalEnergies’ JV Asset, represented Managing Director Oliver Cassassoles and emphasized that reading is essential for acquiring knowledge. He stated that the initiative aims to nurture the next generation of leaders by encouraging young people to become readers who can influence others in their schools and families.

Imemba highlighted that “every secret in life is hidden in books,” urging attendees to use their time in school to uncover these secrets. He noted that those who succeed in their careers are often avid readers. He quoted various authorities, stating that the world is complex and that books provide the tools needed to navigate it. He encouraged making reading a lifelong habit, referencing Barack Obama’s view that reading is the foundation of all knowledge.

Sharing his own experience, Imemba recalled how he read extensively in school and even chose to take the General Certificate of Education (GCE) exams privately. He explained that he had to read many books independently to prepare for the exams, ultimately passing all his subjects due to his dedication to reading.
