Battle line drawn between Wike and Fubara
Political leaders from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are in conflict with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike over the turmoil within the Rivers State PDP chapter. The governors are also considering actions against the PDP National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagun, due to his role in the Rivers PDP, where Wike has maintained complete control after a recent congress, sidelining the disgruntled Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Both Wike and Fubara are committed to staying in the PDP and continuing their fight. The PDP Governors Forum (PDPGF) was prompted to respond after Wike, the former Rivers State governor, threatened to disrupt PDP-controlled states in retaliation for their governors’ support of Fubara.
The relationship between Wike and Fubara, who was Wike’s chosen successor, has been strained over party control in Rivers. Initially, Fubara adhered to Wike’s advice to avoid national politics and focus on local governance, which kept him out of PDPGF meetings. However, the political rift has since surfaced openly.
