Bobrisky Released After Six-Month Jail Sentence for Naira Abuse
On Monday morning, controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, was released from Kirikiri Correctional Centre after serving a six-month sentence for Naira abuse at a party. Bobrisky, who identifies as a woman but admitted to being male during his sentencing in April, was freed on August 5, as reported by PREMIUM TIMES.
A video of Bobrisky’s release has gone viral, showing the cross-dresser in high spirits. Fans were surprised by Bobrisky’s new appearance, noting a fresher and lighter complexion, and fuller cheeks. Bobrisky was seen dancing and celebrating with friends, including actress Moyo Lawal, filmmaker Eniola Ajao, and celebrity fashion designer CEO Luminee, who awarded him the ‘Best Dressed Female Award’ at a recent movie premiere.
After his release, Bobrisky spoke out against the practice of spraying money, warning that such actions can lead to imprisonment. He emphasized the importance of following rules and regulations, stating, “It’s not just criminal activities like killing that can send someone to prison, but also small offences.”
Bobrisky’s lawyer, Ayo Olumofin, confirmed the completion of his client’s sentence but declined to speak on his behalf. The Lagos Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) did not confirm if Bobrisky would need to report back to the Correctional Centre.
In April, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Lagos Federal High Court sentenced Bobrisky without an option for a fine, aiming to set an example for others abusing the Naira. Bobrisky’s six-month term began on March 24, the day of his arrest. Subsequently, Bobrisky filed a notice of appeal seeking a reduced sentence or an option of a fine, citing no prior criminal convictions and provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) for a lesser sentence.
Bobrisky’s case mirrors that of actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who was convicted for spraying and trampling on new Naira notes at a wedding in Lagos. Omoseyin’s actions led to her arrest and arraignment on charges of tampering with currency. She was granted bail after her arraignment.
Bobrisky’s release and his message to fans highlight the consequences of Naira abuse and the importance of adhering to legal guidelines.
